NERRS Centralized Data Management Office National Estuarine Research Reserve System is developing local networks of continuous water quality monitoring stations in representative protected estuarine ecosystems and a nation-wide database on baseline environmental conditions in the NERR system of estuaries

Estuary Net Home Page Estuary-Net was developed by the National Estuarine Research Reserve System in response to water quality issues arising in coastal areas. This project strives to develop collaborations among high schools, community volunteer water quality monitoring groups, local officials, state Coastal Zone Management (CZM) programs and
National Estuarine Research Reserves (NERRS) to solve non-point source pollution problems in estuaries and their watersheds.

 (NOAA) - National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

(NOS) - NOAA National Ocean Service An organization of the Department of Commerce, NOAA is composed of the National Ocean Service, National Weather Service, National Marine Fisheries Service, National Environmental Satellite Data, and Information Service, and Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research.

(OCRM) - NOAA Office of Coastal and Resource Management OCRM administers the National Coastal Zone Management Program, National Estuarine Research Reserve System, and the National Marine Sanctuary Program

(SRD) - NOAA Sanctuaries and Reserve Division The Sanctuaries and Reserves Division (SRD) is a part of the National Ocean Service's Office of (OCRM). Headquarters offices are located in Silver Spring, MD. SRD Administers both the National Marine Sanctuary Program and the National Estuarine Research Reserve System.

US Army Corps of Engineers
The New England District (NAE) is responsible for managing the Corps' civil responsibilities in a 66,000 square-mile region encompassing the six New England states east of the Lake Champlain drainage basin.

The New York District of the United States Army Corps of Engineers is where the Corps began. The geographical area covered by the New York District contains the largest population concentration of any of the Corps' Districts.

DAMOS (Disposal Area MOnitoring System) is a program begun in 1977 by the New England District of the US Army Corps of Engineers to manage and monitor offshore dredged material disposal sites from Long Island Sound to Maine.

US EPA  The mission of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is to protect human health and to safeguard the natural environment - air, water, and land - upon which life depends.

US EPA Adopt a Watershed  EPA challenges citizens and organizations to work to protect and restore our valuable rivers, streams, wetlands, lakes, ground water, and estuaries.

US EPA Beach Watch  The BEACH program is designed to encourage governmental agencies at the federal, state, tribal, and local level to strengthen beach water quality standards and testing methods, use predictive water pollution models to better inform the public about beach water quality conditions, and make information about the risks associated with swimming in contaminated beach water available to the public.

The Southern New England - New York Bight Coastal Ecosystems Program (SNEP) office in Charlestown, Rhode Island is a primary focal point and coordinator for Service coastal activities in the southern New England coast, the New York-New Jersey Harbor, and the New York Bight, i.e., the expanse of relatively shallow ocean water covering the bend in the continental shelf off the shores of New Jersey and Long Island.

Educational Institutions


Connecticut Sea Grant 
The Connecticut Sea Grant College Program, based at the University of Connecticut at Avery Point, funds marine research and is a primary source of information about marine and coastal issues, including those related to Long Island Sound.

EMPACT
The objectives of this EMPACT Project is to provide water quality monitoring data from Long Island Sound to a broad spectrum of users - enhancing the appreciation, knowledge and use of the Sound.

National Sea Grant Depository 
The National Sea Grant Depository (NSGD), located in the Pell Marine Science Library (University of Rhode Island), houses the only complete collection of Sea Grant funded work which now includes 72,000 documents.

NEMO - Nonpoint pollution Education for Municipal Officials
NEMO is a University of Connecticut Cooperative Extension System project using GIS to teach local officials about the sources and impacts of nonpoint source pollution, how different land uses affect water quality, and what towns can do to protect water quality.

New York Sea Grant 
A cooperative program of the State University of New York and Cornell University, Sea Grant focuses on research and the transfer of scientific information to industry, government, resource managers, and the public.

SUNY Marine Science Research Center  
The Marine Sciences Research Center (MSRC) is the State University of New York's center for marine research, graduate education, and public service. MSRC is also the University at Stony Brook's center for research, education, and public service in the atmospheric sciences.

University of Connecticut Maps and Geographic Information Center
MAGIC is a library of digital geo-spatial information. All of the data available through FTP are in the public domain, licensed data are available only on the campus of the University of Connecticut in Storrs, Connecticut.

NMFS administers NOAA's programs which support the domestic and international conservation and management of living marine resources.

Hudson River Foundation  The Hudson River Foundation supports scientific and public policy research, education, and projects to enhance public access to the Hudson River.

Manhattan Island Foundation Has water quality and swimming-related links.

Clean Ocean Action is a member of the Environmental Fund for New Jersey (EFNJ). This fund  supports a coalition of eighteen of New Jersey's leading Environmental organizations.
                                                 
The Quinnipiac River Fund was created "to improve the environmental quality of the Quinnipiac River and the New Haven Harbor and the watersheds of these waterbodies, and otherwise to benefit the environment of these resources".

Schooner,Inc. is a private, non-profit marine education organization dedicated to the conservation of the environment, particularly Long Island Sound and the rivers of Connecticut, and appreciation of their culture, history and future.

American Littoral Society  The American Littoral Society is an environmental organization concerned about issues that affect the littoral zone: that area on the beach between low and high tide.

Community Environmental Council A nonprofit research, policy development and education organization headquartered in Santa Barbara, works to solve environmental problems through design and implementation of environmental management systems.

Friends of the Bay  is a volunteer-based, not-for-profit, environmental organization in Oyster Bay, New York.

The Long Island Sound Foundation facilitates the exchange of information and enhances the ability of individuals and organizations to address issues impacting Long Island Sound.

Soundkeeper is dedicated to the protection and enhancement of the biological, physical, and chemical integrity of Long Island Sound and its watershed.

The National Audubon Society conserves and restores natural ecosystems, focusing on birds and other wildlife for the benefit of humanity and the earth's biological diversity.

The Natural Resources Defense Council, the Connecticut Fund for the Environment and Save the Sound examined and graded the policies and programs affecting water quality of the 78 coastal communities surrounding the Long Island Sound.

 The Nature Conservancy preserves plants, animals and natural communities that represent the diversity of life on Earth by protecting the lands and waters they need to survive.

Save the Sound is a bi-state, nonprofit membership organization dedicated to the restoration, protection, and appreciation of LIS and its watershed through education, research, and advocacy. They are headquarted in Stamford, CT and there is an office on Long Island at the Garvies Point Museum in Glen Cove.

SoundWatch is a grass roots volunteer organization to protect, and educate people about Long Island Sound's value, beauty, history, threats, and damage

SoundWaters is a nonprofit environmental education organization located in Stamford, CT, dedicated to the restoration and preservation of LIS and its watershed through hands-on learning and public awareness.
